‘Vital city 2025’ design competition judging underway

Judging took place today for the Future Spaces Foundation’s recently launched design competition aimed at students from the universities of Bath and Portsmouth.

The students were tasked with designing a ‘Component of Place for a Vital City of 2025’, drawing on the values of the Foundation and its 2016 international research study on transport and connectivity.

Each university determined whether the component was for an existing city or a hypothetical one, and whether or not it addressed a site-specific problem. The projects could work at a range of scales and be anything from a single building, a map for a communications network, or a strategy for a city.

The expert panel of judges with the hard task of narrowing down the entries to one winner included:

    • Greg Willis, Future Spaces Foundation & Make Architects
    • Helen Yabsley, Lendlease
    • John Prevc, Future Spaces Foundation & Make Architects
    • Jo Smit, Editor and Journalist
    • Professor Kevin Singh, Birmingham School of Architecture
    • Patrick Bellew, Atelier Ten
    • Peter Greaves, Future Spaces Foundation & Make Architects

    Judge Peter Greaves said:

"The panel were really impressed by the calibre of entries from Bath and Portsmouth Universities. It’s been fascinating to see how students have synthesized the ideas that underpin the FSF into innovative designs and practical plans to make real-world cities more vital."

The winner, who will take home £1,000 in prize money, will be announced at the design competition awards ceremony and exhibition at Make Architects studio on 3rd July.
